翻译的原则问题：直译还是意译？
特别是在难度很大的汉译英时应该怎样处理，《译心译意》中给出了一段分析：
【“直译基础上的意译”、“该直译时就直译”，几乎成了我国译界的一个共识。这一论点源于人们丰富的翻译实践，又为翻译实践提供了积极的理论指导。
《红楼梦》中的俗语翻译值得研究。以下译文绝大部分采用了直译，或曰，保留了俗语的固有形象。值得称道。比如：
树倒猢狲散—— Trees fall and monkeys scatter.
而一些汉英词典提供的现成译文却是：Rats desert a falling house.】
