【英语中有不少鸟兽鱼虫的名词，除本义外，通常还有丰富的喻义，可直接用来指认，形象生动，意味隽永。翻译时应该留心。
一、以“鸟”喻人
# dove：（本义）格；（喻义）主和派人物。如：
Senator Mcgovern was one of the leading doves in the Congress.
参议员麦戈文是国会里主和派（鸽派）的一个首领。
# hawk：（本义）鹰；（喻义）主战派人物。如：
… both Hawks and Doves are unanimous that the Vietnamese war must be brought to an immediate end if the United States economy is to avoid further disruption.
主战派和主和派都一致同意，美国的经济如果要避免进一步陷入混乱，就必须立即结束越南战争。
# bird：（本义）鸟；（喻义）人，姑娘（俚语）。如：
John used to be a petty clerk, but he is quite a big bird now.
约翰本来是个小职员，可他现在已成了个大人物了。
又如：an early bird（早起者，早到的人）、a wise bird（聪明人）、a cunning bird（滑头鬼）、birds of a feather（同类的人，一丘之貉）
二、以“兽”喻人
# bear：（本义）熊；（喻义）粗鲁的人，脾气暴躁的人。如：
She’s nice but her husband is such a bear that nobody likes him.
她和蔼可亲，但她丈夫为人粗鲁，脾气暴躁，谁都不喜欢他。
# cat：（本义）猫；（喻义）恶女人，狠心的女人。如：
She’s such a cat. She never has a nice word to say about anyone.
她是那样狠心的女人，从来没说过谁一句好话。
三、以“鱼”喻人
# shark：（本义）鲨鱼；（喻义）贪诈的人。如：
a loan shark（高利贷主）、the big sharks（垄断资本家）
